How the treatment works.

We explain the complete process, from initial assessment to follow-up throughout growth.

Initial clubfoot assessment
01

Assessment

We begin with a general assessment of the child and a specific examination of the foot to understand the origin of the deformity, its severity and stiffness.

For children under 3, casting may start the same day. For older children, a personalised procedure is scheduled following Ponseti principles and the needs of each case.

02

Casts

Correction is gradual. After gentle, precise manipulation, we apply a moulded cast extending to the groin to maintain the position achieved.

The usual plan involves 3 casts, one every 4 days: approximately 12 days of gradual correction, checking the foot's response before each step.

Tenotomy

Tenotomy is performed in approximately 99% of cases. This brief procedure helps complete correction when the Achilles tendon still limits the appropriate position.

It takes place in the clinic under local anaesthesia, with the family present. A new cast is then worn for 15 days to protect and consolidate the correction.

Follow-up

After casting, we teach caregivers how to fit the foot abduction brace correctly and practise together until they feel confident doing it at home.

The first check-up takes place at 4 months. Further appointments are scheduled every 6 months until growth is complete, monitoring progress and answering questions.

Your questions about treatment works.

Common questions about the Ponseti method, its stages and clubfoot follow-up.

Is clubfoot treated using the Ponseti method?

Yes. Treatment follows the Ponseti method, a gradual and gentle approach combining manipulation, serial casting, tenotomy when indicated and follow-up with foot abduction bracing.

What happens at the first clubfoot assessment?

We assess the child's general health and examine the foot to understand the deformity's origin, severity and stiffness. This information guides a personalised treatment plan.

How many casts does a child with clubfoot usually need?

The usual plan involves three casts, one every four days, over approximately twelve days. Each visit includes gentle, precise manipulation before fitting a moulded cast to the groin.

Is tenotomy part of clubfoot treatment?

Tenotomy is performed in 99% of cases to complete correction when the Achilles tendon restricts the foot's position. It is a brief procedure performed in the clinic under local anaesthesia with the family present.

What happens after tenotomy?

A new cast is worn for around fifteen days after tenotomy. Follow-up then begins: we teach caregivers to fit the foot abduction brace and practise together until they are confident.

What does clubfoot follow-up involve?

The first review is usually at four months, followed by check-ups every six months until growth is complete, to monitor development and identify changes early.

Understanding the process is part of treatment too.
